Rutland Girls Can

Rutland and Melton Secondary Schools This Girl Can Event

On Wednesday 18th April 2018, 57 girls from Catmose College, Uppingham Community College, John Ferneley College and Long Field Academy attended the third annual Secondary Schools' This Girl Can event at the Active Rutland Hub.

Due to the success of the Rutland secondary schools event in previous years, Melton schools were also invited for 2018.

The aim of the event was to encourage the girls to develop their confidence and knowledge of local provision to start taking part in some form of physical activity on a regular basis.

The girls participated in a variety of new and fun activities that they may have not had the opportunity to try before in a strictly GIRLS ONLY ZONE! To ensure the girls were participating in activities that they wanted to try they got to choose 3 of the activities below:

  • Dodgeball - Led by Clare and Sam from Melton and Belvoir SSPAN
  • Football - Led by Clare and Sam from Asfordby Amateurs Ladies and Girls FC
  • Zumba! - Led by Nicola Morgan and Lisa Harris
  • Kickboxing - Led by Jackie Hunt from Pro Martial Arts Schools
  • Street Dance - Led by Sarah Bell from Rutland Youth Dance Academy
  • Gymnastics - Led by Vicky from Oakham Artistic Gymnastics Academy

The day did not just involve physical activity, other activities included: a glitter stand, a photo competition, group photo booth, loud music, hula-hooping and skipping competition, and a pledge board!

'This Girl Can is always a fantastic day for our students. Being able to take them off site to try new sports really helps as they feel more relaxed and willing to try all the different activities. They always interact really well with students from the other schools and new friendships were made throughout the day. The variety of activities was excellent and it was great to see the event run by inspiring young females. Our students had a great day and I'd love to see more of these events in the future.'- Mr Lewin (Uppingham Community College)

'It was really good fun and the teachers were really motivating. I am going to look into doing kickboxing outside of school.- Katherine (Catmose College student)
