The countdown is on ahead of the Leicester-Shire & Rutland School Games Spring Championships!
The seven sport extravaganza pits schools against schools and districts against districts in the battle to see who will top the School Games Medals Table at the end of the academic year. Held at Loughborough University on 5th April, schools have already progressed through earlier Level 2 competitions for the chance to represent their areas, and it looks set to be another memorable Championships.
The day will begin with BBC Radio Leicester's Ian Stringer compering the event, and a special Skateboarding performance from Team Rubicon will mark the Opening Ceremony. Local School Games Ambassador and Team GB Paralympic star Sam Ruddock will be on hand at the Closing Ceremony.
More than 45 schools will descend on Loughborough University campus, hoping to show the same sporting success that the recently named "Best sporting University" has for decades.
The sports that teams will be participating in are:
- Wheelchair Basketball
- Learning Disability Basketball
- Indoor Rowing
- Sportshall Athletics
The Spring Championships is followed in June by the Summer Championships, which will be held over at Uppingham School Sports Centre on 30th June. That day will see teams compete seven different events, with summer sports such as cricket and tri-golf on the agenda.
The School Games action doesn't stop in spring for Loughborough. The University will again host the National School Games from 31st August – 3rd September 2017, where the most talented young athletes compete. There will be opportunities for Schools and spectators to attend.
The Leicester-Shire & Rutland School Games, now in its seventh year, is part of the national 'School Games Programme' that is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire young people to take part in more competitive school sport. It is open to all young people aged 5-18 years, of all abilities and backgrounds from every school across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland.
